Descartes was born on March 31, 1596 in La Haye, France to Joachim and Jeanne Descartes. He had a brother and a sister, both older than him. In 1597, his mother died and his father remarried. Descartes went to live with his grandparents at a young age. When he was older he attended La Fleche, a Jesuit college. He spent 8 years studying there and ended when he was 18. He left college known for his academic brilliance.
Descartes traveled a lot from 1618-1628, learning from different teachers and understanding their ideas. He met mathematician Isaac Beeckman, whom he learned much about geometry and algebra from. With him, he perfected the act of describing geometric figures like shapes with algebraic formulas. This contributed to the foundation of analytic geometry.
